Securing a Ballet Bun
Preparation and Necessary Items
Before beginning, gather the following items: a hairbrush, hair ties (preferably thin and strong), gel or hairspray (optional, for smoothing flyaways), and specialized hair fasteners designed for bun construction. Ensure hair is dry or slightly damp and thoroughly brushed to remove tangles.
Creating a Stable Base
Form a ponytail at the desired location for the bun (typically at the crown or nape of the neck). The ponytail should be secured tightly with a hair tie. The tightness of the ponytail is crucial for the overall stability of the bun.
Forming the Bun Shape
There are several methods for shaping the bun. One common technique involves twisting the ponytail. The twisted hair is then wrapped around the base of the ponytail, creating a circular shape. Another technique involves dividing the ponytail into two sections, twisting each section individually, and then wrapping them around each other and the base.
Fastening Techniques
Specially designed U-shaped pins are used to secure the bun. These fasteners are typically shorter than bobby pins and have a blunt, rounded tip to prevent scalp irritation. Insert the fasteners strategically around the bun's perimeter, anchoring the wrapped hair to the base of the ponytail and to the scalp. The pins should be inserted point-first, catching sections of hair from the bun and the base ponytail, and then rotated to lie flat against the head.
Placement and Quantity
The quantity required depends on hair thickness and the desired security. A minimum of four fasteners is recommended, but more may be necessary for thicker or longer hair. Evenly space the fasteners around the bun to distribute the support. Ensure the fastener tips are not poking the scalp and are completely concealed within the bun.
Finishing Touches
After securing the bun, apply hairspray to smooth flyaways and provide extra hold. Check the bun's stability by gently shaking the head. Add more fasteners as needed to ensure a secure and polished look.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
- Bun is loose: Increase the tightness of the initial ponytail or add more fasteners.
- Flyaways: Use gel or hairspray to smooth stray hairs and secure them to the bun.
- Fasteners are visible: Re-insert the fasteners, ensuring they are fully concealed within the bun's layers.
