TOEFL iBT Scoring
Section Scores
The TOEFL iBT test comprises four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. Each section receives a scaled score from 0 to 30. These scores reflect the examinee's performance in each individual section.
Total Score Calculation
The total score is calculated by summing the scores from each of the four sections. The resulting total score ranges from 0 to 120. There is no weighting given to any particular section; each contributes equally to the overall score.
Score Reporting
The total score, along with the individual section scores, is reported to the examinee and institutions designated by the examinee. The report includes the scores and a percentile rank indicating the examinee's performance relative to other test-takers.
Score Validity
TOEFL iBT scores are valid for two years from the test date. After this period, the scores expire and are no longer accepted by institutions.
Subscores (Writing and Speaking)
The Writing and Speaking sections are further analyzed into subscores. These subscores provide a more granular assessment of the examinee's performance in specific aspects of these sections, such as grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and coherence. These subscores are also reported along with the total and section scores.
Score Interpretation
TOEFL iBT score interpretations vary among institutions. Individual institutions establish their own minimum score requirements based on their specific academic programs and admission criteria. Therefore, examinees should consult with each institution to determine their specific score requirements.
